What is considered to be a heavy period?
What is a normal period for one woman may not be normal for you — your period may last longer, or your flow may be heavier.
Here are some common symptoms of heavy periods:
- Your tampon or pad needs to be changed frequently
- Nighttime bleeding that requires getting up to change pads or tampons
- Passing large blood clots (the size of a quarter or larger) during your period
- Bleeding lasts longer than 7 days
What is NovaSure® and how can it help?
NovaSure® endometrial ablation is a 1-time, 5-minute procedure designed to remove just the uterine lining — the endometrium — which is the part of your body that causes heavy bleeding. No incisions are required, leaving your uterus intact.
The NovaSure® procedure is done in the comfort of our office and here is how it works:
Step 1
Your doctor opens your cervix (the opening to your uterus) slightly, inserts a slender wand and extends a triangular-shaped netted device into your uterus.
Step 2
The netting expands, fitting to the size and shape of your uterus.
Step 3
Precisely measured radiofrequency energy is delivered through the netting for about 90 seconds.
Step 4
The netted device is pulled back into the wand, and both are removed from your uterus.
Am I a good candidate for NovaSure®?
NovaSure® endometrial ablation is for pre-menopausal women with heavy periods due to benign causes who are finished childbearing. The NovaSure® procedure is not for those who have or suspect uterine cancer; have an active genital, urinary or pelvic infection; or have an IUD.
It is important that you carefully evaluate all of the treatment options available and choose what you feel is right for you. Talk to your doctor. Talk to your partner or family. Take your time and weigh all of your options.
What is the cost of the NovaSure® procedure?
Treatment for heavy periods is covered by most insurance plans, so the cost is usually the amount of your copay.
As with any medical procedure, we always recommended calling your insurance company to have them explain your coverage.
Are there any risks or side effects?
Rare but serious risks include, but are not limited to, thermal injury, perforation, and infection.
Temporary side effects may include cramping, nausea, vomiting, discharge and spotting.
